Drywall Texture Finish Plaster. How to Cure-Fix Porous Ceilings and Walls
75Help! My Drywall Texture Plaster is Drying too Quick!
Before you even start your Drywall Texture finish, pattern, design, or attempt onto your ceilings & walls you must read this first!
Drywall texture art & effects Comb finishes onto ceilings & walls.
But why is the texture drying off too quickly once i apply it to my ceilings & walls thus making it impossible to even create patterns & designs using my drywall Texturing Combs or any such tool infact?
Here is a letter I received off one of my customers.
Take it away Anne.
Dale, very sorry to be getting back late, have been busy on the house upgrade, repairs & remodelling.
Decided I probably would not know what to do with the rose combs so thought that in long run the set of 3 regular standard combs might serve me better.
Please just send the video that shows me how to create the 3d effect oystershell pattern -- am not so sure I will have time to do lot of reading. As well would like to see your oyster shell technique live & direct so that I can follow suit--in your pictures & your youtube videos it is a beautiful design.
When you say seal the walls I'm not sure what that refers to.
Here in the USA common practice is to texture right onto bare drywall w/o any preparation to it. Would you do something different than that in the UK?
Also would appreciate your input on this. I've a ceiling that had popcorn drywall texture finish-got scraped and then painted. Do you think the texture will stick to painted surface? If not, would paint primer help?
Thanks, appreciate your time and follow up.

Although you have not much time to read Anne I would advise you to flick through both the books & choose a subject closest to your heart at the moment, & personally, I think that would be 'preparation of your ceilings and walls'.
OK, on with the good stuff!
Here is the problem why your drywall texture is drying out too quickly!
I would advise you not to put something such as 'mixed drywall texture (from powder form, or even ready mixed) onto a porous surface because that would be asking for trouble.
To apply any such building product, such as drywall texture, or even plaster, onto a surface, the surface first has to be sealed, (primed) especially if the surface is not shiny (sheen), this primer not only helps to bond the drywall texture onto the ceiling or wall, but the major aspect of sealing such a surface by priming it is to prevent the new plaster/drywall texture from drying out too rapidly! Here in the UK within the demise of drywall texturing, we call priming a ceiling, wall, or a surface, sealing.
All will be explained perfectly within the two guides on there way to you, even though it is quite normal to apply drywall texture directly onto a wall board, or plasterboard, it is not advisable during creating artistic effects especially when training & practising the art of drywall finishes as a new student when using texturing combs. (Even though you may be using the material of knowledge purchased from me to do just a one off building project, I still hope your striving to be good at this art of texturing though lol) & your texturing combs then become your creative paint brushes to finely draw your imagination & artistic flair onto the blank canvass of your ceiling, before you.
In the UK & Europe our ceilings & walls are usually basically painted with either 'matt emulsion' which, once applied then dried onto the ceiling/wall would have a flat matt dull lifeless finish. Now, if you can imagine, you applied something like drywall texture/plaster onto this surface, (drywall texture/plaster being water based, meaning, the moisture content within evaporates) the building material would 'absorb into the surface' making it impossible to work the drywall texture/plaster for too long & this is not good.
The second finish is titled 'vinyl silk emulsion' whereas, once the applied paint has dried off, the finish would create a shiny effect, so if you could imagine applying your drywall texture to this, the moisture content would take longer to evaporate into the surface (& sometimes through hot air) thus preventing it from dry out, & the texture would be more 'playable' on the surface, & I like this one.
The more the porous background surface, the more it should be sealed prior to applying texture & available in some stockists is a priming product titled PVA & PVA acts as either a glue, or a 'sealer of porous surfaces', whereas one can mix parts PVA with parts water to create an adequate sealer onto a surface prior to texturing or plastering. Maybe you have access to such products within the USA or Canada.
I hope some of this helps Anne & please do study the preparation aspects of the 2 books before giving it it go & I hope you let me know how your getting along.
I would love for you to let me know what you think of the books & If your stuck with some ideas please contact me.
